WINNIPEG, MANITOBA - Powertec Electric has provided the electrical work for the Block D apartments at 1931 Taylor Avenue, the first apartment block at Naawi-Oodena, the Treaty One Nations’ urban reserve on the former Kapyong Barracks lands in Winnipeg.
Located westbound on Taylor Avenue at Kenaston Boulevard, the apartment project represents an important step in the transformation of Naawi-Oodena from a long-vacant former military property into a new mixed-use community.
The history of the land stretches back decades. Kapyong Barracks was vacated by the Canadian military in 2004, after which the Treaty One Nations challenged the federal government’s plans to dispose of the property. Years of court proceedings and negotiations followed. In December 2022, the Naawi-Oodena lands were formally converted to reserve status and repatriated to the joint reserve land base of the seven Treaty One First Nations.
Today, development plans for Naawi-Oodena envision a community combining housing with commercial, cultural, educational, recreational, health, and community spaces. The Block D apartments bring the residential portion of that vision into physical form, establishing the first apartment building on the urban reserve.
“It’s exciting to be part of a project that represents something genuinely new for Winnipeg,” said Daniel Hartley, President of Powertec Electric. “Our team is proud of the electrical work we’ve completed at the Block D apartments, and even prouder knowing that the building is part of the much larger vision taking shape at Naawi-Oodena.”
For Powertec Electric, the project also reflects the company’s experience delivering electrical work for large and complex construction projects throughout Winnipeg. Powertec works across the residential, commercial and industrial sectors, with an emphasis on safe workmanship, efficient project delivery, and dependable electrical systems.
As construction and development continue across Naawi-Oodena, the Block D apartments at 1931 Taylor Avenue will stand as one of the early residential landmarks of a site that has undergone a remarkable transformation: From former military lands, through nearly two decades of legal and political work, to a growing First Nations-led community in the heart of Winnipeg.
